Lot size revision 2024-25

According to SEBI circular SEBI/HO/MRD/TPD-1/P/CIR/2024/132 dated October 01, 2024, any index derivative contract introduced to the market from trade date 21st November 2024 must have a minimum value of ₹15 lakhs to ₹20 lakhs. This requirement applies to all index derivative contracts—weekly, monthly, quarterly, and half-yearly.

For contracts introduced before 21st November 2024, the following conditions will apply:

  • The lot size for weekly and monthly contracts will remain unchanged until their expiration.
  • The lot size of existing quarterly and half-yearly contracts will change to the new lot size at the end of the day on December 24, 2024 (for BANKNIFTY), December 26, 2024 (for NIFTY), and December 27, 2024 (for Sensex).
  • If you hold existing contracts in Nifty, Bank Nifty, or Sensex after these respective dates and the quantities do not align with the new lot sizes, you will not be able to close these positions and must hold them until expiration.
  • To align your position with the new lot size, you can either buy or sell additional quantities or liquidate your position entirely before the change occurs.

For contracts introduced before 21st November 2024, the following conditions will apply:
